The Ultimate Safari Checklist
The term "Big Five" originally referred to the five most difficult animals to hunt on foot. Today, it represents the ultimate wildlife checklist for photographers and safari-goers.
1. The Lion
The "King of Beasts" is abundant in the Serengeti, often seen resting on kopjes or stalking prey in the tall grass.
2. The Leopard
Elusive and solitary, leopards are masters of camouflage, often found resting in the branches of acacia trees.
3. The Elephant
Tanzania's elephant populations are particularly impressive in Tarangire, where these gentle giants travel in matriarchal herds.
4. The Buffalo
Cape Buffalo congregate in large herds and can often be seen grazing on the open plains or near water sources.
5. The Rhinoceros
The rarest of the five, the Black Rhino is critically endangered. The Ngorongoro Crater offers the best chance of a sighting.
